So more and more, the popular music industry is tasked with convincing the audience to appreciate what they see and feel and less and less about what they hear. Sure, a song still needs to be appealing to the listener when they hear it on the radio. But knowing who the song was made by is as important as what the song sounds like. This new holistic approach to the musical product is how we approach music from a media literacy perspective. We are not just interested in what a song sounds like, but what does the song mean? How does it affect the way we dress and the words we use? How does the entire musical product (the song, the video, the artist) affect the way we behave? These are the questions we want to ask ourselves as we study music and its effects on our lives.
